Fresno State Honors Students Offer Community Service

Daniel “Danny” Ashley is a California State University, Fresno, graduate who earned his biology degree magna cum laude. A committed community volunteer, Danny Ashley participated in food bank activities while at Fresno State and was a student health volunteer with the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) Costa Rica Medical Mission Trip in 2016.

The scope of FIMRC mission activities spans both clinical and health education efforts in the underserved region of Alajuelita, Costa Rica. Among volunteers’ responsibilities at the clinic is developing needs-specific health education curricula for the local population. They also input patient data through an electronic medical record system and observe medical staff-patient interactions. As required, they chart patients’ vital signs.

Beyond the clinic, a major FIMRC focus is on implementing health educational initiatives at the Tejarcillos soup kitchen. These include sessions in a location where children receive daily hot meals and are provided with a safe, fun place to play. Those who participate in FIMRC missions do not simply gain knowledge of healthcare field work, but also witness a tangible positive impact in the lives of those they help.
